[Snowdrops are flowers which are among the first bulbs to bloom in spring.]

This rengay was written with Betty Kaplan who is now retired from the Fashion Industry. She used to arrange clothes, now she arranges words. Betty started writing haiku in the early 1990's. Haiku changed her life. She has been published in Frogpond, Lynx, Woodpecker, South by Southeast, World Haiku Review, Sketchbook, American Tanka , Simply Haiku and CHO.

Vacant Seat

Patch of daffodils —
the old John Deere parked
by a collapsed barn.

Empty rocking chair —
the cat naps undisturbed.

Swing set —
a vacant seat sways
back and forth.

The kite's tail
hangs from a branch —
spring drizzle.

She rushes to the back —
one "occupied" light is off.

The backhouse door
lies on the ground — a squirrel
sits atop the roof.

The central theme in this rengay is "Unoccupied". A secondary theme of "Seat-related" also worked out: Tractor seat, Rocking chair, Swing's seat, Kite's tail (tale), and Facilities (airplane & backhouse).

The central theme in this rengay is "Left There": Sleigh in the yard, Hose in the yard, Straws in a glass, Credit card number at a website, Wallet at home, Will left ahead.

[It is a little unusual to buy a car over the Internet. It has a relatively high price and most buyers like to physically "kick the tires". However, I've heard some folks that have bought a car on-line.]

Low Tide

Longer days —
toys begin to emerge
from the snow.

We scour the beach for shells
and trinkets — low tide.

Past forty —
each morning's combing,
more forehead.

Opening bell —
trading starts lower
yet again.

Spring fashion sale —
in my size, gone!

Sinking sun —
the last rays glimmer
on the tree tops.

Some have pointed out that this rengay touches on the change of seasons, our own mortality, and a negative, entropic sense. The actual theme I had in mind was the idea of "receding" (snow, tide, hairline, stocks, clothes, daylight). And, when you think about it, receding is obviously at the root of these other interpretations.

Instant Replay

March flurries —

back then it was by train
for three days.

Riding the subway —
I listen to a Beatles album
on my iPod.

Old-timers hockey game —
a cell-phone instant replay.

Late winter
skiing trip — each run
still a thrill.

The first and last verses of this rengay reference the theme of "Then & Now" the same way but from different perspectives. In the first verse the snowflakes falling on the hand at the end of winter are viewed differently than when snowflakes fell on the same hand at the beginning of the winter. In the last verse the level of joy for skiing has not declined over the course of the winter.
